Maintenance and lifespan of your bow

A bow is an essential part of your instrument and needs proper maintenance to perform optimally. In this blog we discuss how to keep your bow in top condition and which common problems you can prevent.

1. Daily maintenance

  • Applying rosin : A bow needs rosin regularly to get a good grip on the strings.

  • Tension and relaxation : Always tighten the hairs before playing and relax them after playing to prevent deformation of the stick.

  • Keep dry : Avoid humid environments as this may warp the stick.

2. Periodic maintenance

  • Replace the bristles : Bristles wear out over time and should be replaced on average once every six months.

  • Check the frog and winding : Damage to the winding or frog can affect balance and playability.

  • Clean the stick : Remove excess resin with a dry cloth and have stubborn stains professionally cleaned.

3. Common Problems and Solutions

  • Hair breaks easily : The hair may be dried out or the tension may be too high.

  • The bow is bent : Store the bow in a sturdy case and avoid temperature fluctuations.

  • No grip on the strings : Add more rosin or replace worn hairs.

Regular maintenance will keep your bow in perfect condition and preserve its playing characteristics.
